Pediatric Dentist Calgary, AB
Here at The Smile Team Pediatric Dentistry, we are proud to specialize in pediatric dentistry. Our entire staff is very good with children. We know and understand how children think, so we can start them off right. We want them to believe the dentist’s office is a good place instead of being scared of it. We take our time with all patients so they have an enjoyable visit.
We offer a full range of pediatric dental services…
We’re certified specialists of pediatric dentistry with extensive experience treating complicated cases and children who are afraid of the dentist.

Regular Checkups and Cleanings
By offering comprehensive care, we are happy to offer routine and preventive care to our patients. It is our goal to give our patients the best chance at having a healthy mouth. We are dedicated to teaching you about the preventive care you can do at home to keep your child’s mouth as healthy as possible.
We also do routine cleanings, getting the tartar and buildup that your child can’t reach so your child can have a healthy mouth. During this time, we also look for any problem spots or talk to you about better preventive care, if needed.

Dental Care For Your Baby
Even before any teeth come in, your baby’s gums need attention to stay healthy. You should clean your baby’s mouth with a damp washcloth after every feeding. This helps get rid of any food particles and start the habit of good oral care.
Your child’s first dentist appointment should be scheduled within six months of the first tooth’s arrival. Since even the youngest children can get decay, it is really important to visit the dentist regularly. During these early visits, we look for any problems and help you get into the habit of practicing good dental care. It is important that you stay positive so that your child enjoys coming to visit us.

Sedation Dentistry
General Anesthesia
When your child is put under general anesthesia, your child will be asleep, just like if he or she was having major surgery. Using general anesthesia has greater risks, but often the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks.
Conscious Oral Sedation
Conscious oral sedation is achieved using prescribed oral medication that is taken in our office before a procedure. It can help reduce anxiety during short dental procedures. Dr. Prabhdeep is very specific about the children that she offers oral sedation for. Not all patients are candidates for conscious oral sedation. If you are interested in this modality, please call us for a consultation.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a combination of two different gases–-oxygen and nitrogen. We administer the gas through a small mask placed over your child’s nose. The gas will make your child relax without the full effect of anesthesia. Nitrous oxide sedation is mild but with Dr. Prabhdeep’s techniques, it can help us complete fillings and many other procedures without the need for local anesthesia (freezing).

Special Needs Dentistry
Here at The Smile Team Pediatric Dentistry, we are proud to provide dental services to patients with special health care needs.
Special needs patients require a dentist and staff who are compassionate. They need a dental specialist who is understanding and able to work with them in unique ways to ensure that their mouths are healthy. They require a dentist who has the expertise and extra education to be able to treat and prevent dental concerns.
Pediatric dentists are experts in understanding the health concerns of children with special health care needs. Dr. Chahal is a staff member at the Alberta Children’s Hospital where she treats the children of Calgary that are challenged with severe special health care needs.

Sports Dentistry
Whether or not the sport your child plays requires the use of a mouthguard, it may be helpful to wear a mouthguard to prevent injury.
There are many types of mouthguards. Some are pre-formed while others are customized to fit a child’s teeth and jaw..
After a thorough examination, we would be happy to discuss your options so you can protect your child’s teeth from damage during sports activities.

Thumb and Finger Sucking
We all know how soothing pacifiers can be for small infants. Pacifiers can comfort them and help them fall asleep. There can also be adverse effects of prolonged pacifier use. Dr. Prabhdeep can help you guide your family through this phase in a gentle way and provide insight and advice regarding possible future concerns and how to prevent them.
If you have any questions about thumb and finger sucking or pacifier habits, don’t hesitate to contact us today at (587) 356-8326.

Restorative Dentistry
We are able to present a variety of treatment options for your child’s teeth. After we guide you through all our treatment options, we allow you to make the final decision regarding the treatment modality that best fits your family philosophy.
Baby teeth are not just small adult teeth. They have specific characteristics that require specific care. We will tailor a specific treatment plan for your child together with you based on their treatment needs and your desires. We offer many treatment options including white fillings, white and silver crowns, pulpotomy treatment, sealants and space maintainers.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry
Dr. Prabhdeep is committed to being at the forefront of new treatment modalities. Minimally invasive dentistry can be an option for some children. The process involves slowing down cavity progression without the use of a dental drill.
Minimally Invasive Dentistry does not fix the tooth but can buy us some time if there are any barriers to definitive treatment. These treatments involve the use of silver diamine fluoride, glass ionomer restorations using the SMART (Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique), and the Hall technique for crown placement.
